“Can I still be a good therapist if I....?”

The answer is YES. The answer is that your circumstances are part of your character. The answer is that your circumstances give you perspective and motive and (ideally) empathy and courage.

Good therapists do not inherently have good lives. Good therapists learn how to cope, grow, and advocate for change. Good therapists come from disadvantaged backgrounds, from complicated mental health histories, and from profound places of despair.

We need diversity in this field, in every form of that word. This is how change happens, how mental health treatment evolves into viable and sustainable care.

You are good enough, and you always were. You simply owe it to yourself -and your current and future clients- to be the best version of yourself, despite your setbacks and obstacles. You CAN be a good therapist, and you CAN thrive while doing this work.
